Where to stay for Dalhalla

A limestone quarry seven kilometres outside a small Swedish town, with the stage fifty-five metres below the car park. There's no train — the arena runs its own bus, the fare depends on which town you stay in, and you can't buy a ticket on the night.

The short answer

Stay in Rättvik, and book the bus when you book your room. It's the closest town with a good choice of places to stay, it's in the cheapest fare zone, and it's where trains from Stockholm stop.

Try Leksand or Tällberg if Rättvik is full. The fare is the same — zones are set by town, not distance — and you'll be by the lake rather than on a main road.

Avoid Gävle and the other zone-1 towns. The bus fare more than doubles, to 610 SEK per person, before you've paid for a room.

What time does it finish?

Not published. Dalhalla doesn’t publish start or finish times, and they vary by show. Check the start time on your ticket, and book the transfer bus rather than counting on a time.

Before you book: bus tickets close at 11:59pm the night before

Dalhalla's transfer bus is "only available for pre-purchase. You can not buy your ticket onboard or on-site at Dalhalla." Reservations close at 11:59 PM the day before the concert.

If you arrive on the day and plan to sort out the journey back then, you can't. The quarry is seven kilometres from the nearest town, it'll be 11pm, and in rural Sweden there are no taxis to flag down.

The bus is also booked separately from your concert ticket and your hotel, so that's three bookings to line up — and neither of the first two mentions the bus.

How much the bus costs from each area

The fare depends on which town you're picked up from, so where you stay decides what the ride home costs — and the most expensive zone costs more than double the cheapest.

Where you stay Verdict To the quarry The ride back
Rättvik and the Siljan shore Cheapest bus, closest hotels 7 km. Transfer bus zone 3. 295 SEK return on the transfer bus — Dalhalla's lowest fare. See stays

Each area in more detail

Rättvik and the Siljan shore — Cheapest bus, closest hotels

A lakeside town on Siljan with the most places to stay in zone 3, and the station where trains from Stockholm stop.

Suits: Almost everyone. It's the closest, the cheapest to get back from, and the only zone-3 town with a real choice.

It's a small town in July. There's only so much to go round, and a sold-out Dalhalla night means 6,000 people looking for rooms.

Leksand, Tällberg, Insjön and Vikarbyn — Same fare, quieter, further round the lake

Villages and lakeside hotels around Siljan. Tällberg is a resort in its own right.

Suits: Anyone who finds Rättvik full, or who'd like a few days by the lake rather than one night.

Further from the station, so more to organise if you're coming by train. And the bus still leaves from a set pick-up point, not your door.

Falun, Borlänge, Mora and Orsa — Bigger towns, 49% higher fare

Proper towns with chain hotels open all year, which is why they don't sell out the way Rättvik does.

Suits: Larger groups, late bookers, and anyone who wants a proper hotel room rather than whatever's left in a village.

The extra fare adds up if there are two of you. It's only worth it if the room is more than 145 SEK per person cheaper.

Gävle, Sandviken, Avesta and the zone-1 towns — Twice the fare, and a long way back

Cities, with city prices. Gävle is on the coast, an hour and a half away.

Suits: Almost nobody going just for Dalhalla.

You'll pay 315 SEK per person more in fares than from Rättvik, and add an hour each way to a night that already ends late.

The venue's own glamping and motorhome pitches — The only stays within walking distance

Dalhalla's own site says the arena is within walking distance of its glamping site and motorhome parking.

Suits: Anyone who'd rather not think about the bus, and doesn't mind camping.

Glamping and motorhome pitches, not hotel rooms, and space is limited. Book through Dalhalla — we don't earn anything from these.

Things that will catch you out

Your town decides your fare, and it can more than double

The transfer bus has three fare zones: 295 SEK from Rättvik, Leksand, Tällberg, Insjön, Utby and Vikarbyn; 440 SEK from Borlänge, Djurås, Falun, Grycksbo, Mora and Orsa; 610 SEK from Avesta, Gävle, Hedemora, Hofors, Ludvika, Sandviken and Säter. Booking sites don't tell you this.

There's no return timetable

Dalhalla says "there is no timetable for the return journey from Dalhalla – the bus departs from its assembly point after the concert." There's no departure time to plan around; you leave when the bus does.

Three separate bookings that have to line up

The venue says the transfer bus "is booked separately from your concert ticket and accommodation reservation", and runs "from any of the accommodations recommended here on our site". In practice, the venue's recommended list is the list of places you can stay and still get picked up.

It's a quarry, and the way in is downhill

The auditorium has "steep slopes and many stairs". Dalhalla says it's "possible to walk down to row 36 without stairs, but the final slope is steep". Whatever you walk down at 8pm, you'll walk back up at 11pm, in the dark.

Rain won't stop the show

"Dalhalla is an outdoor arena, and events are not canceled due to rain or wind." Dalarna in June isn't reliably warm, and the stage is 55 metres below ground, where it's colder than up in the car park.

Parking is cheap, but you can't sleep there

Parking is about 200 metres from the entrance, costs 50 SEK, and opens three and a half hours before the start. Overnight parking isn't allowed, so you can't sleep in your car. An Arena Bus runs between the car park and the arena for 40 SEK one way, card only, and can't be booked in advance.

What we could not verify yet

Dalhalla doesn't publish concert start or end times, taxi information or public transport information on its visitor pages. So everything here about getting back is about the transfer bus — the only option we could confirm.

  • Concert start and end times. Dalhalla doesn't publish them and they vary by event, so we can't tell you when you'll be walking back up the slope.
  • Whether any taxi or public bus serves the quarry after a concert. The venue doesn't mention either, and we couldn't confirm any alternative to the transfer bus.
  • How many seats the Restaurant Bus has. Dalhalla only says there are "a limited number".
  • Which hotels are on Dalhalla's recommended list. The venue describes the arrangement but doesn't name the properties, so we can't tell you which ones include a pickup.

Every figure above comes from Dalhalla's own visitor pages, except the capacity, which the arena doesn't publish and which comes from Wikipedia. Fares and the booking deadline were checked on 12 September 2026 — check them again before you rely on them.
