Where to stay for Fuji Rock

Despite the name, it isn't near Mount Fuji. It's held at a ski resort in a Niigata valley, two hours from Tokyo, reached by one road and one shuttle bus. The festival warns that you can't catch the last train home after the show — and the real problem is the shuttle queue, not the timetable.

The short answer

Stay in Naeba, next to the site, if you'll be there till the end. You can walk back, so there's no bus, queue or train to worry about. There are ten properties on Booking, and the festival sells most of the rest itself.

Stay in Echigo-Yuzawa for more choice. It has forty-eight properties, a Shinkansen station and onsen baths — but it's a ¥2,000 shuttle away, and getting back can take up to two hours at one in the morning.

Don't try it as a day trip from Tokyo. The last train leaves Echigo-Yuzawa at 22:25, so you'd have to leave the site by about 20:25 — mid-evening.

The shuttle queue is what strands you, not the timetable

The festival gives two warnings about the last train. The first: "After the show ends, you will not be able to catch the last train from Echigoyuzawa Station." The second matters more: "Depending on the congestion situation, you may not be able to catch the last train departing from Echigoyuzawa Station."

So even if you leave early for a specific train, you can still miss it, because you have to get through the bus queue first. The festival says: "You may have to wait for more than an hour to get on the bus."

How long it takes to get back

All of these times are published, just in different places.

StepWhat it costs you
Queue for the shuttle "You may have to wait for more than an hour to get on the bus."
Ride to the station About 40 minutes, "but it may take more than an hour during busy times."
Last train toward Tokyo 22:25 — Toki 346, Echigo-Yuzawa to Tokyo, arriving 23:40. Checked on the JR timetable on 13 September 2026.
Last shuttle, venue to station 25:00 on Friday to Sunday. It runs long after the train has gone.

An hour queuing plus an hour on the bus, for a 22:25 train, means leaving the site by about 20:25 — before the headliners.

The last shuttle at 1am won't help: it gets you to the station two and a half hours after the last train has left. That's why where you stay matters so much here.

Will anyone be at reception when you get back?

It depends where you stay. In Naeba you walk back in ten minutes to a small lodge where, according to Booking, nobody lists a 24-hour front desk. In Echigo-Yuzawa someone may well be at reception — but you have to get there first.

Naeba Prince Hotel can't be booked through us. It's the one large hotel at the site, and the festival sells its rooms by lottery through its own tour centre in the first sales period. It's listed on Booking.com, but don't expect festival nights to be available there.

Every property with a 24-hour desk is in town, and none you can walk back to has one. Booking lists 48 properties in Yuzawa and a 24-hour front desk for six — all six are listed here. At Naeba Ski Resort it lists ten, with a 24-hour desk for none. "Ask first" means the listing doesn't say, not that the door will be locked; at a small Japanese lodge it usually just means telling them when you'll arrive, which you should do anyway.

Counts were checked on 13 September 2026 without dates, so they show what was bookable that day, not what will be available in July. There are no prices, because there are no festival dates yet.

The two places to stay, compared

Naeba — at the gate — Walk back

Suits: Anyone planning to stay until the end of the night — which here is most people.

Getting there: Walking distance. No bus, no queue, no train. None needed — the shuttle queue doesn't affect you.

A ski village out of season: lodges, guesthouses and self-catering houses, plus the Prince Hotel, which the festival mostly sells itself.

The trade-off: Ten properties on Booking, and none lists a 24-hour front desk. You'll avoid the journey but may find the door locked, so ask about late arrival before you book.

Echigo-Yuzawa — the station town — More choice, but a long queue

Suits: People who want more choice, a bath and a station, and don't mind a two-hour journey at one in the morning.

Getting there: ¥2,000 shuttle, 40 minutes (longer when busy), plus up to an hour queuing. The shuttle fare "can be used once for both a round trip and a return trip" — pay on board coming from the station.

A Shinkansen town with onsen hotels and forty-eight properties, six of them with 24-hour reception.

The trade-off: The queue is the risk, not the timetable. And the bookable fast bus that skips the queue only runs to the venue, not back.

Things that will catch you out

The fast bus only goes one way Affects getting home

There's a bookable "fast bus that takes you to the venue without waiting", sold through the FRF Official Tour Center in limited numbers. But it only runs to the venue. The way back uses the same shuttle as everyone else, so it doesn't help with the queue that matters.

Camping and nearby rooms are sold separately Worth checking

A festival ticket doesn't include a pitch: the Campsite Ticket is ¥6,000 per person. Rooms near the venue are sold through the official tour centre across twelve areas, first by lottery and then first come, first served. That's three separate purchases, and the rooms closest to the site go first.

No 2027 dates have been announced, whatever other sites say Worth checking

The official English site still shows FUJI ROCK FESTIVAL '26 and nothing for 2027. Listing sites and travel calendars already show '23–25 July 2027', but that's a guess based on the usual last weekend of July. Don't book flights on it.

What we could not verify yet

  • What time the site closes. One unofficial source says 05:00 on the main nights, which would make the 25:00 last shuttle even tighter. The official pages only confirm a 24:00 close on the day before the festival, so we haven't printed 05:00.
  • Whether the ¥2,000 shuttle fare covers a return trip if you didn't take the shuttle on the way in. The wording mentions "a round trip and a return trip" but doesn't say.
  • Whether the festival releases Naeba Prince Hotel rooms on Booking.com for festival nights, or keeps them all for its tour centre. We can't check until 2027 dates are announced.
