Where to stay for EDC Thailand

There's no camping, so everyone at this festival stays somewhere else and travels in and out each night for three nights. The venue is inside a resort estate — so the hotels within walking distance are also the ones telling you how far away everywhere else is.

The short answer

Stay in Bang Tao or Cherng Talay. You're in the same corner of the island as the venue, without the resort estate's prices, and close enough to walk if you can't get a car.

Book your car before the first night, not during the third. Locals say ride apps around Bang Tao are overwhelmed at closing time.

Book Sunday night too, and consider staying near the airport. The festival ends on Sunday, and Monday morning traffic in Phuket is at its worst.

Check the date on anything you read: there were two EDC Thailands in 2026

One ran 16–18 January 2026. This one runs 18–20 December 2026.

EDC Thailand ran twice in 2026. Set times, line-ups and reviews from early in the year are about the January festival, not this one. That includes set times, line-up posts and "what to expect" guides.

Getting there is easy

Phuket International is about 17km from the venue, roughly 22 minutes on a clear road. A taxi costs around US$17–21 equivalent for a metered or agreed taxi. There's also a scheduled public bus: Phuket Smart Bus runs hourly from the airport to Cherngthalay Wittayakom School, about 49 minutes, for a few dollars.

It's the easiest of Thailand's December festivals to reach — an international airport twenty minutes away, with a public bus running past. Getting to Phuket isn't the problem; the last two kilometres at two in the morning are.

Live prices

The six areas to stay, compared

Ordered by how confident we are in each. There's no price column, because we haven't been able to verify nightly prices for Phuket in peak season. The map above shows live prices for the right nights.

Area Verdict Where it sits Getting to the gate
Laguna Phuket Walk back, but pricey Inside the same complex as the venue
Integrated resort estate
On foot, by bicycle, or on the internal shuttles the estate's hotels run. See stays
Bang Tao and Cherng Talay Nearly as close, better value The beach and village immediately outside the complex
Beach road, restaurants, ordinary hotels
A short ride, and the Phuket Smart Bus route runs through Cherng Talay. See stays
Surin and Kamala Fifteen to twenty minutes south The next two bays down the west coast
Quieter beaches, a wide price range
Car or ride app. No useful late public transport. See stays
Patong Most rooms, longest road The far side of the headland, south down the coast
Phuket's nightlife strip
Car over the hill. The road is winding and it is the island's worst for congestion. See stays
Nai Yang and the airport side Right for the last night only North of the venue, beside the airport
Quiet, low-rise, close to departures
Car. Ten minutes or so to the airport. See stays
Phuket Town Wrong side of the island The south-east, across the island from the venue
The island's real town, and by far the most interesting
A long drive across the island, twice a night. See stays

Arrive the day before and leave the day after. The last night is a Sunday, and Phuket's airport road is at its worst on a December Monday morning — so don't plan to check out straight from the festival.

Hotels inside the resort estate and just outside it

What matters here is which side of the estate gate you're on, not the distance. Rhythm Park is inside Laguna Phuket, so the first five below are in the same complex as the venue and the rest are just outside it.

We don't list nightly rates here: prices for these dates change too quickly, so the link shows live prices instead. "Unchecked" means we couldn't confirm the reception hours — ask the property before you book if you'll be back late. Reception hours come from each property's own listing, checked on the date at the bottom of the page. They can change, so confirm with the property if you'll arrive late.

Each area in more detail

Laguna Phuket — Walk back, but pricey

Suits: Anyone who can afford it and doesn't want to worry about getting back at 2am.

You really can walk back. But these hotels also have the most to gain from telling you everywhere else is hard to reach, and some of them do — so take their advice on the alternatives with a pinch of salt.

Bang Tao and Cherng Talay — Nearly as close, better value

Suits: Most people. It's the same corner of the island without the resort estate's prices.

You're a few minutes from the gate rather than inside the estate, which normally makes no difference. On nights when everyone leaves at once you'll be in the same queue — but you can walk if you have to.

Surin and Kamala — Fifteen to twenty minutes south

Suits: People who want a beach without a festival on it, and don't mind arranging a car.

Far enough to be calm, close enough to be practical. The coast road to Bang Tao is the bottleneck, so agree your pickup point and time before the first night, not during the third.

Patong — Most rooms, longest road

Suits: People who want nightlife on their doorstep on their other nights and will pay for cars.

It has the most hotels on the island, which matters in a busy December week. A hotel a kilometre from the venue claims Patong faces two-hour traffic jams — but it has rooms to sell. Our view is simpler: it's a real journey, it will be slow at closing time, and it's a perfectly good base if you book a car in advance.

Nai Yang and the airport side — Right for the last night only

Suits: The Sunday night, if you are flying out on the Monday.

As a base for the whole festival it's quiet and in the wrong place. But for one night at the end, it saves you the worst morning of the trip — splitting your stay makes sense here.

Phuket Town — Wrong side of the island

Suits: A trip to see Phuket, not a festival trip.

We like it more than anywhere else on this list, but we still wouldn't book it for the festival. It's on the other side of the island from a venue with no rail link, and the drive back at closing time is exactly the problem to avoid.

Is Patong really two hours away?

Some accommodation guides claim that hotels in Patong face two-hour traffic jams getting to the venue. The source we traced it to is a hotel inside the same estate as the venue, about a kilometre from the gate.

That doesn't make it untrue. Phuket's west coast road is slow, the Patong hill is a bottleneck, and fifty thousand people leaving one place at once will cause a jam. But a two-hour figure from someone selling the alternative isn't a measurement, so we're not repeating it as fact.

Our view: Patong is a real journey and will be slow at closing time. But it has the most hotels on the island, which matters in the third week of December. It works if you book a car in advance instead of hoping to find one at 2am — just don't treat it as a quick fifteen-minute ride.

No camping

There's no camping — the organisers say so and point people to hotels instead. So all fifty-odd thousand people a night stay somewhere else and travel in.

That means six journeys, not two: there and back on each of three nights. Whatever you arrange has to work six times, including the last trip on the final night, when everyone wants a car at once.

The age limit is 20 and over — older than most festivals, and older than Thailand's drinking age. It catches people out.

Things that will catch you out

No closing time or official shuttle has been published

We can't find a published finish time or a confirmed festival shuttle for this year — only that some hotels run their own. You'd want both before booking somewhere you can't walk back from.

Ride apps are the plan everyone else also has

Locals say taxis and ride apps in Bang Tao are overwhelmed at opening and closing times. Booking a car in advance costs a bit more, but means you leave when you want to, not when a car turns up.

It's high season in Phuket, and there are other festivals

Phuket is already at its most expensive that week, and this is the fourth Thai festival weekend in a row — Wonderfruit, then Tomorrowland Thailand and Big Mountain Village on the same weekend, then this. If you're going to more than one, expect flights to be very busy.

During the day

Three nights at a festival leaves three free days on a tropical island, and Phuket has plenty to do — the islands off the south coast, the old town's shophouses, and the quieter northern beaches a few minutes from Bang Tao.

Take it easy on Sunday. The last night is the one to be rested for, and Monday is for getting to the airport.
